Dear Shelton Families,

Jeffco JSEL – Summer of Early Learning

JSEL (Jeffco Summer of Early Learning) is a six-week, intensive summer school program that focuses on increasing students’ literacy and math skills. JSEL will be in session from June 6-July 18, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day, except July 4. Sessions will be held at seven schools this year: Emory, Glennon Heights, Lawrence, Lumberg, Parr, Stevens, and Swanson elementaries. Parents from any Jeffco school may choose from any of the seven locations. Dual language programs for students who are currently enrolled in dual language programs will be held at Emory and Lumberg.

Each day, kindergarten through third-grade students (grades for the 2018-19 school year) will have the same emphasis on reading and writing as they do during the school year. Students will also deepen their number sense and develop problem-solving abilities through a variety of math activities. Small class sizes will allow all students to learn in an authentic, experienced-based, and engaging manner.

Students who are not currently at end-of-year benchmarks or are on a READ plan who have been recommended by his/her teacher are eligible for JSEL. JSEL is for students who are entering grades kindergarten through third grade in the fall of 2018.

JSEL is free to all eligible students and also offers free breakfast and lunch through the Federal Summer Lunch Program. Click here to view the brochure (Spanish) which provides additional information about the program. Parents must complete the registration form (Spanish) by Friday, May 30.

Lego Wall – Work in Progress

Maggie Chesser has worked diligently to set up a Lego Wall in our library. It should be complete before Spring break.  Why a Lego Wall you ask?  This wall has many educational uses.  It will be part of our transformation of the library as we strive to create a more collaborative environment where all students can create, read, write and learn outside of their own classroom.  We are currently working on adding new furniture and a Makerspace area as well.  Thank you Maggie!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  PLEASE DONATE ANY EXTRA LEGOS OR SETS YOU MAY HAVE AROUND YOUR HOUSE.

Design Challenges- print design challenges on cards and have next to the wall. Have blank cards that kids can fill out to create their own challenges.

  1. Create something symmetrical
  2. Build your name with Legos
  3. Build a Lego tic tac toe board and play
  4. Build a miniature model of your house
  5. Create a math problem and have someone solve it
  6. Create a scene from a favorite book. Etc

Writing Practice

  1. Letter practice
  2. Spelling practice

Story starters- build a scene and ask kids to create a story around it.

Math skills

  1. Counting skills
  2. Fractions

Games

  1. Chess
  2. Checkers
  3. Tic Tac Toe

Marble mazes- create a maze for a marble to fall through to the end. Race another student with their maze. Time yourself and make changes to make your maze slower or faster.

Lego Movie Maker- app that allows you to make stop motion picture movies with Lego scenes.

Talent Show

I want to give a Big Shout out to the Patrick’s, the Shelton’s and the DeBarr’s for putting together an amazing talent show for our students.  It is so great to see students in a different element . . . singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, performing magic, etc.  Shelton Elementary definitely has TALENT!
