From: Karen Brown <karbrown@jeffco.k12.co.us>
Subject: Principal's Message

Dear Shelton Families,

We have a lot happening over the next few weeks so please take a few minutes to read the Principal's Message this week.

No School for Students on April 26th!

Jeffco Public Schools will be closed for students on Thursday, April 26, 2018 due to labor shortages.  You should have received a message from Dr. Glass, Jeffco's Superintendent (https://goo.gl/aTg1Jk) explaining the situation in further detail.

And, don't forget that Friday, April 27th is an early release day at 1:00 PM.

School Accountability Meeting Follow-Up

Once the agenda is finalized for our follow-up SAC meeting on Tuesday, April 24th, I will post on our website and send a School Messenger as well.

2018 Healthy School Champion

Shelton Elementary School is proud to announce that we are a 2018 Healthy School Champion and have won the $500 Excellence Award for our school health efforts.

As one of 47 champions named as a 2018 Healthy School Champion, our work will be honored through the annual recognition program which awards schools and school districts for creating and supporting a healthy school environment and successfully implementing effective school health efforts that support student learning.

Healthy School Champions Recognition is presented by Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) and  Colorado’s Healthy Schools Successful Students, and sponsored by The Colorado Health Foundation.

Schools and school districts are awarded based on their implementation of best practices in school health, captured through an assessment tool called Smart Source, a narrative outlining their work, and letters of support. “For the winning schools and districts, health and wellness is embedded into the culture and systems.  It’s about having an intentional investment to meet the needs of their students and staff in order to achieve academically,” said Amy Dyett, Director of School Health at CEI.

Shelton was selected for its improvements in the past few years, some of which include building a new school and community garden, launching the student-led Health Heroes, moving recess before lunch, and implementing mindfulness programs.

Field Day

It’s almost time for Field Day!  The big day this year is on May 11, 2018.

Important Times

Opening Ceremony – 9:00 A.M.

Morning Session - 9:12-11:12 A.M.

Lunch – 11:12-1:00 (Normal school lunch schedule)

Afternoon Session – 1:00-3:12

Closing Ceremony – 3:12-3:25

All parents and family members are welcome!  There will be some competitive events as well as stations we’ll do just for fun. Don’t forget your camera to take pictures.

We are excited to have a fun Colorado Sports Teams theme this year.  We want your child to feel like an ALL STAR for the day. We encourage kids to wear Shelton or Colorado sports team apparel.

Please have your child dressed for any kind of weather. I would suggest layers so they can remove items when it gets warmer.  They may want to wear a hat. Students must wear tennis shoes, no cleats or boots. PLEASE- Remember the sunscreen and a water bottle with their name on it!

If you are interested in volunteering please contact Kier Bard at kierdbard@hotmail.com

Looking forward to a FUN day!

Mrs. Knickerbocker, Physical Education Teacher - aknicker@jeffco.k12.co.us

Hats, Jackets, Gloves, etc. . . . Going, Going, Gone!

Please have your child look through the lost and found on the table in the main hall.  There are many clothing items students have lost or misplaced.  I’ll bet some students have two or three items in there.  Please stop by the school and check it out.  Anything left will be donated to Serving Kids on Friday, April 20th.

City of Golden State of the City Address

Each year, Golden City Manager Jason Slowinski presents the “State of the City.” In his address, he reflects on the past year and gives an update on what is going on in the City of Golden now and into the future.

This year, he decided we should hear from the next generation of Golden residents to get their views on our city. Our youngsters did not disappoint!  We have several Shelton students who shared their ideas.
