Principal's Message, 3/6/18

Subject: Principal's Message, 3-6-18

Dear Shelton Families,

The Florida school shooting and aftermath has caused many emotions in our students, families, and staff. Many have asked questions regarding how to help, how to process with children, and what to do next. Thank you for the support you have shown to our school community; we are grateful for our family and community partners who care deeply about the safety and success of students.

Jeffco has fielded questions at a number of schools regarding an event organized by EMPOWER, the Women’s March Youth Branch. The event is planned for Wednesday, March 14th at 10 a.m., one month after the Parkland, Florida shooting. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am in each time zone across the U.S. and last for 17 minutes — one minute for each victim.

Per our policies, Jeffco Public School staff will not promote or endorse the walkout event. At Shelton, we are not organizing any event with staff or students. However, we acknowledge that some of our students, staff, and families may want to participate in some capacity. Our school focus for March 14th will be on teaching and learning.  We anticipate that different school levels, elementary, middle and high, may handle the events of the day differently. Regardless of level, the primary focus is to always keep our kids safe.

Parents or guardians may choose to check their child(ren) out or excuse them for the day; this is a family decision.  Normal student check out should be followed to excuse a student absence.  Absences will be considered excused when attendance procedures are followed.

Thank you for your continued partnership in educating our most precious gifts, our students.

Lunch Time

In an effort to continue to improve the efficiency of the lunch line and get students through the lunch line faster we are asking that any lunch and/or snack money be put in a baggie or envelope.  Please label the baggie or envelope with your child’s name (first and last), teacher and grade.  Students will then turn in their money into the cafeteria during soft start in the morning.   We will start this immediately.  Please call Michael Zweifel with any questions.

Cup Stacking Club

March 7th is the last day to turn in forms for Cup Stacking Club!  There are only a few spots left and scholarships are still available

ADHD and Executive Brain Functioning Seminar

Parenting a child who has ADHD/Executive Function challenges can place enormous stress on any family.  While there is a range of support available for children, parents often struggle to know how to help. Please read the ADHD Support for Parents (April 2018)_.pdf   to learn more about how Kim Bierbrauer, a Speech and Language Pathologist, can support parents and teachers with education, tips, tools, and strategies, to help families tackle challenges together and learn how to thrive.

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Glass will moderate a panel discussion from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, at Lakewood High School (9700 W. 8th Ave). School security staff, local law enforcement, and other community partners will share information on how we all work together on school safety. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues. Please share this flyer (SpanishJPG for social media use) with your school communities and staff members. The meeting will also be livestreamed( Contact the superintendent’s office if you have questions 303-982-6800. Interpreters will be present.

Working Part Time at Shelton

We need another person in the cafeteria to help out between 10:00 and 2:00 in the afternoons.  This will help students proceed through the line much quicker and give them extra time to eat. Go to the Jeffco Website and apply.

Butter Braids are being sold thru March 9th.  Orders can be placed with any Shelton sixth grade student or in the front office.  A portion of all sales will go to the Shelton Outdoor Lab evening programs.  Braids are $13 and will be delivered March 22nd.   Cash and checks made out to Shelton Elementary are accepted.  Questions:  mailto:Helen.Rhodes@

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Glass will be facilitating four community conversations about school district finances in March and April. The meetings will include a high-level overview of the school district budget, the goals of the new Jeffco Generations vision, and invite discussion on how to utilize funding to meet the needs of our students. Parents, students, staff, and community members are welcome to join in the conversation. What do you think is the most important thing for schools to address? How do you think funds should be allocated to support educational goals? Where would you invest funds to help the Jeffco Generations vision become a reality? Join us for an informative, engaging discussion. Click here to view the flyer (Spanish).
